The Alderson Legacy

In 1938, Hal Alderson, the founder of Alderson Reporting, revolutionized court reporting by using the stenotype machine to report U.S. Senate committee hearings. From that day forward, Alderson has continued to set The Standard for impartial and cutting-edge court reporting and has served many Presidents and key U.S. Senate committees.

Throughout its 70-year tenure, Alderson has been providing court reporting services for many of the most noteworthy events in U.S. history and continues to do so today.



1935 Hal Alderson comes to Washington, DC as a court reporter, recording U.S. Senate hearings and meetings of major unions and trade associations.

1959 Robert Kennedy asks Alderson to provide reporting services for John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign. Teams of Alderson staff reporters work feverishly to provide quick turnaround of accurate transcripts of every speech. Alderson went on to serve three White House Press Secretaries.

1961 Alderson becomes official White House reporter.

1963 Alderson reports the proceedings of the Warren Commission on President Kennedy’s assassination.

1977 Ira Sharp and Rose Ann Alderson-Sharp become new owners. Ira makes a strategic decision to move in the direction of computer-aided transcription (CAT), and Alderson becomes the first company to:
  • offer computerized transcripts in Washington, DC 
  • deliver magnetic media to the House of Representatives, thereby allowing for faster publication of hearing transcripts by Government Printing Office
  • computerize its records and archive transcripts for remote access by attorneys
1986 Alderson covers the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident.

1991 LiveNote® Technologies launches in the UK to develop and market software allowing a litigator to access, annotate, and search transcripts. Soon, U.S. attorneys working in the UK see the benefits of LiveNote® and demand in the U.S. grows.

1992 Alderson joins the DuPont Preferred Service Provider program as a provider of legal services to the corporation’s Preferred Law Firms. 

Alderson becomes the first company to report a political convention in real time for the Internet.

1996 Alderson captions political convention and provides both English and Spanish transcripts in near real-time. 

2003 Alderson is the official reporter for the September 11th Victim’s Compensation Fund of 2001.

2004 Special Counsel, a leading provider of legal staffing and legal resource solutions, acquires Alderson.

2006 Alderson opens new office in New York City.
Alderson offers clients free video synchronization.
